Goalkeeper Training in East Lancashire

Justin Jennings is joined by his son Marcus in delivering Just4Keepers coaching to East Lancashire

Justin was driven, by a lifelong passion for sport, to join Just4Keepers as East Lancashire’s goalkeeper coach.  He tried his hand at many different activities throughout his early life and represented his school in a wide range of different sports, including a call up to the Lancashire Schools Rugby Union squad for fixtures against Yorkshire and Cumbria.  However, football has always come first for Justin and after many years playing at grassroots level, he had a short stint playing with Ashton Town in the North West Counties Football League, where he also completed his FA Level 1 coaching course.

Although he spent the vast majority of his playing days as an outfield player, Justin was a very accomplished 5-a-side goalkeeper, twice reaching the National Finals of an U19 5-a-side competition, only to finish runners-up on both occasions.  It was his ability to also play as a goalkeeper, that led one of his managers to play Justin in goal for an entire season to cover for the long term absence of the team’s regular stopper.  Justin was also the goalkeeper for the Blackburn Teachers team which reached the final of the Blackburn Orphange Cup three years in a row, winning two of them.

Justin has now been coaching for over 10 years, either running his own team, assisting Marcus’s grassroots coaches or as Marcus’s goalkeeper coach. He is currently working towards his FA Level 2 qualification.

Marcus decided very early on that he wanted to be a goalkeeper and so Justin has been his goalkeeper coach ever since.  Marcus also received excellent coaching from another J4K coach in the form of Darren Ford, all of which helped Marcus to earn a trial at Bury FC (age 11) and to be a part of the Manchester City Select squad (age 13).  An extremely agile goalkeeper with excellent handling, Marcus’s coaches believe the thing that has prevented Professional Academies from offering Marcus a place, is his physique.  Being a July born baby and therefore a late developer compared to his peers, Academies have overlooked his ability, to bring in goalkeepers who were much taller, but not as good technically.  At the time of writing, Marcus is 15 years and 7 months, six feet tall with size 12 feet, and still growing!!! He has a bright future as a very good Semi-Professional goalkeeper, and who knows?  Just look at Burnley and England’s Nick Pope who also started as a Semi-Pro.
