Well what a year 2020 was for goalkeeper training in Wigan. We had a great start to the year, just as the weather was turning better and as we looked forward to a fantastic summer of goalkeeping we were hit with the lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the space of a week our sessions went from our usual group classes to ‘stay at home training.’ For the 12 weeks that followed it was very special to read so many supportive messages and be sent videos of the goalkeepers making the best of it at home. It was a win for social media and technology as this allowed us to stay in touch. I remember days spent in the garden designing home training sessions which could be accessed by all in small spaces with little equipment.

The slow easing of the lockdown restrictions allowed group training and football to resume, it was delightful to see the smiles back on the goalkeepers faces once again!

Towards the end of the year as cases began to rise once more football was once again disrupted. The seasons had to pause with no training or matches. With the dark nights and weather changing the home training had to be adapted to more indoor based fitness sessions. Again it was fantastic to see so many people engaging with these sessions and giving them a go!

In this massively disrupted year it was such a challenge for everyone, we were however able to choose our ‘Keepers of the Year for 2020’

Oliver, Nathan and Alfie took home the awards for Monday’s classes. Harrison, Zach and Cameron took home the Friday evening class awards, Cameron is still yet to receive his due to the disruption!

It just leaves me to say a huge congratulations to the winners but also to everyone who has stuck in there through thick and thin throughout the year, let us make 2021 the best year yet for goalkeeper training in Wigan.
